Total Respect 2 – Ensuring Children’s Rights and Participation
‘IT MAKES YOU FEEL IMPORTANT AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL YOU MATTER’
“When my social worker didn’t listen to me, I felt stupid… he didn’t care what I had to say about my life”
Total Respect was originally launched by CROA in 2000 in conjunction with the Department of Health. Since then many organisations in England and Wales
have successfully used the training pack to introduce the concepts of listening and participation within their Agencies.
The training highlights the shared responsibility we all have to ensure that children and young people participate in all aspects of social care, from involvement in individual care planning and statutory reviews to local policy development and children’s services planning, including children in care councils. It also helps learners to ensure young people are taken seriously when making complaints or allegations of abuse.
Individuals who are responsible for listening to children still need to be given the opportunity to work with each other and young people themselves to establish the
practical means of turning children’s voices into real life changes. Total Respect works best when delivered to a mixed audience including front-line staff, team managers, officers and elected members.
Total Respect is unique in that children and young people contributed to the creation of the resource and deliver the taught sessions with support from adult trainers. This ensures that young people’s voices are at the centre of the training.
All young trainers have completed an OCN accredited ‘train the trainers’ course and receive supervisory support from CROA to ensure they are supported in their
training role.
Total Respect train the trainers has been delivered to over 88 people in 2008 and has attracted both Local and National Awards, including the Pavillion Training Award and TOPSS National Training Accolades.
The taught courses are delivered by a team of at least 3 trainers: 1 lead trainer and 2 young trainers who may have experience of receiving care from their Local Authority. The young trainers will have varying levels of training experience and we aim to include a range of trainers at different stages of development.
